The Edinburgh Alpha Sigma branch of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity (DKE-AS) has found itself in hot water after minutes from several private meetings were leaked to the local university’s student newspaper.
In the minutes, which have reportedly been verified as authentic, fraternity brothers discussed the idea of collaborating on a social event with the Feminist Society of the University of Edinburgh (FemSoc).
When the idea of paintball got shot down, a brother asked,
How are we going to rape them?
To which another responded,
Let’s go to Montenegro, for a raping trip.
Unfortunately, that exchange only scratches the surface of the dialogue that happened within the meetings, which took place between 2013 and 2014.
The brothers joked, both in the minutes and privately, about the FemSoc women having penises, raping drunk sorority girls while walking them home and made cruel comments about transgender students.
In a Facebook post, FemSoc wrote,
FemSoc condemns in the strongest terms the abhorrent misogynistic and transphobic behaviour and statements made by the DKE frat.
We hope the university will join us in standing up against sexism and take disciplinary action against students involved in the frat.
The university’s student association, EUSA, also disavowed DKE-AS’s actions, adding,
We as an organisation, alongside NUS Scotland, have publicly condemned [the fraternity] in the past, commenting on the dangerous and misogynistic nature of fraternities which have no place in our student community.
DKE-AS has not yet released a statement.
The chapter of the fraternity, which is not affiliated with the University of Edinburgh, isn’t the only DKE branch to receive the wrong kind of attention.
DKE was banned from Yale University for five years beginning in 2011 after pledges were made to recite rape-themed chants.
The fraternity’s famous alumni include six US presidents, including Franklin D. Roosevelt and George W. Bush.
