We all know deep down that our midnight cravings aren’t terribly good for us. But who can resist a few Oreos at 3am when they’re staring right at you from across the kitchen? Well, maybe it’s actually 3pm. And it was more than a few. And then it happened again at 4pm. And 5pm. And 6pm. Well, you get the point. What is it that keeps us coming back to those sugary treats? It’s not like most cookies and candies are gourmet or fancy. Just pile on the sugar and we’ll eat it right up!
With Halloween just around the corner, our love for that sugary goodness is at its strongest and priciest. But it’s fine, right? It’s Halloween! That’s what you’re supposed to do! It’s just a once per year indulgence. Well, it’s not quite an indulgence anymore when Americans eat well beyond the daily recommended intake of sugar each and every day. Sweets have gone from an indulgence to a necessity and, we hate to break it to ya, it’s slowly ruining our minds and bodies. Happy holidays, right?
Last week, John Oliver, who’s slowly establishing himself as the next Stephen Colbert or John Stewart, had a segment about this addicting, white substance. In his 11 minute speech, Oliver drops some cold, hard facts about sugar’s addictiveness and how we’re slowly losing our health. Don’t believe us? Check it out below.
Next time those cravings come around, perhaps settle for some fruit or just a glass of water to fill that void in your stomach. Anything to keep the processed sugar away. And when you’re headed out for a night of drunken debauchery, maybe settle for some vodka with seltzer water instead of Red Bull. You’d be surprised how quickly your stomach will flatten out just by making little changes like that.
