Why A College Education Is About More Than Just The Classroom Education

Think about this. You go to college/university for any number of years towards a degree, diploma or certificate. You take a set of designated classes towards this end, your goal. Over the course of those years whether it be 1, 2, 4, 6 or however long it takes you to finish, what did you really learn?

I’m sure you learned a few things that you probably didn’t attribute to school, but let’s stop and think for a moment. The entire college experience is about learning. You learn about yourself, you learn about other people, the way the world works and you get a taste of what it’s like to be an adult. You don’t spend all of your time in a classroom, the library or a study hall now do you? There are many lessons you can learn outside the classroom that can be just as useful or even more so than some of the things you learn in a lecture or a lab.

Here are a some of the things you can learn besides the typical science, business, math, languages and so forth:

Learn how to:

1. Pick your friends.

2. Choose partners.

3. Search for a job.

4. Budget and manage money.

5. Manage time.

6. Network with people.

7. Handle work on your own.

8. Live by your own means.

9. Be responsible for you actions and yourself.

10. Plan your future.

11. Become a leader.

12.  Operate within your means.

13. Grow as a person.

14. Change your way of thinking.

15. Be independent.

16. Understand and accept yourself as a person.

17. Evaluate your skills, talents and abilities.

18. Create new opportunities for success.

19. Form lasting bonds.

20. Make yourself positively noticeable and recognizable.

These are only some of the things you can learn. There is so much that you can learn in those valuable years. The brain is a big data warehouse so why not fill it with useful things that can help you in all aspects of your life. The information we gather from our experiences is crucial to everything we do in our lives. Instead of limiting yourself to things you learn in a classroom, expand your mind and broaden you horizons. Try joining clubs and organizations, taking on campus jobs or basically anything you school has to offer. Even if it doesn’t seem interesting to you, try it anyway, you just never know. The best thing you can do not just in those important years but in life in general is to make the best of every opportunity you have available to you. What you can gain from every experience is more valuable than anything in the world and you will be able to use it later and benefit. When you can learn something, which is all the time, always learn all you can when you can.
