Apps You Should Be Using: Yik Yak

If you are looking for an entertaining social media look no further than Yik Yak. Yik Yak has a layout similar to twitter, the anonymity of 4Chan, the voting of Reddit, the local availability of Tinder and the absolute randomness of Tumblr.

Each post, or Yak, is limited to 200 characters and is only visible to people that have the app within a radius of a few miles of where the Yak was sent. With a Twitter-style layout, every single Yak is posted and can be commented on. Each post can be “upvoted” and “downvoted” with the most popular yaks at the time showing up on a separate panel.

Comments can be voted on as well and the higher people vote your Yaks and comments, the higher your “Yakarma” score goes. In larger communities such as Syracuse University or Duke, there are dedicated pages to Yaks about the area..

While completely anonymous, you are allowed to add a handle to each Yak but not to your account. Nothing you post can be linked back to you through name.

It’s quick, it’s fun and its highly addictive once other people in your area get into it as well. Available for iPhone and Andriod, Yik Yak is an app made for college students.
